Privacy-first processing
This tool is designed to process its working input in your browser. For details about site-level analytics, advertising, and data handling, see the Privacy Policy.
Operation
Encode a query value, path segment, or other URL component.
Component mode applies JavaScript's encodeURIComponent or decodeURIComponent.
Full URL mode uses encodeURI or decodeURI so URL delimiters such as :, /, ? and # are treated differently from component data.
Percent-encoding is not URL validation and does not make an untrusted URL safe to visit.
Quick start
How to use URL Encoder / Decoder
- 1
Choose one of four operations: Encode Component, Decode Component, Encode Full URL, or Decode Full URL.
- 2
Paste or type the full URL, URL component, path text, or percent-encoded value into the input area.
- 3
Review the result and use the detected query-parameter table when the input contains a query string.
- 4
Copy the result or use it as the next input when you need to continue a conversion workflow.
Overview
About URL Encoder / Decoder
URL encoding, also called percent-encoding, represents data bytes with a percent sign followed by two hexadecimal digits when characters cannot be used directly in a URI component or would otherwise be interpreted as delimiters. RFC 3986 distinguishes unreserved characters from reserved characters such as ?, &, /, and =. Whether a reserved character should be encoded depends on the URI component and whether the character is acting as syntax or literal data. This URL Encoder and Decoder helps inspect or prepare URL components and query values in the browser. Encode individual data values before inserting them into a URL, and avoid repeatedly encoding or decoding an already processed value.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Why do URLs require percent-encoding?
- Percent-encoding is used when a byte cannot appear directly in a URI component or when a reserved character needs to be treated as literal data instead of syntax. Which characters should be encoded depends on the specific URI component.
- What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent in web development?
- encodeURI is intended for a complete URI and preserves many structural delimiters. encodeURIComponent is intended for an individual component such as a query value and encodes many characters that could otherwise be interpreted as URI syntax. It still leaves a small set of characters unescaped.
- Is percent-encoding case-sensitive?
- The percent sign (%) is followed by two hexadecimal digits. While hexadecimal letters (e.g., %2F vs %2f) are functionally equivalent, uppercase letters are recommended by the RFC 3986 standard for consistency.
- Is my URL data logged or stored on a server?
- The encoding and decoding operation itself runs in your browser and does not require uploading the URL text to our server. Treat real bearer tokens, signed URLs, and other secrets carefully even when using client-side utilities.
