Privacy-first processing
This tool is designed to process its working input in your browser. For details about site-level analytics, advertising, and data handling, see the Privacy Policy.
URLs are parsed with the browser's native URL API. If no scheme is supplied, this tool assumes https://.
Parsing can normalize URL serialization, such as hostname casing, percent-encoding, or default ports. Parsing does not verify that the destination exists, is reachable, or is safe to visit.
Quick start
How to use URL Parser
- 1
Paste a full URL, protocol-relative URL, hostname, or hostname with a port into the input field.
- 2
Review the normalized URL and the notice when HTTPS had to be assumed.
- 3
Inspect protocol, origin, hostname, effective port, pathname, fragment, username, and masked password information.
- 4
Review raw and decoded path segments plus decoded query-parameter key-value pairs.
- 5
Copy individual parsed values as needed.
Overview
About URL Parser
Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) serve as the fundamental address system for locating resources on the World Wide Web. Modern web addresses often contain complex layer structures, including protocols, subdomains, port numbers, multi-segment paths, hash fragments, and lengthy query string parameters used for user sessions, tracking tags, and API arguments. Manually reading or extracting individual parameters from long, percent-encoded URLs can be tedious and prone to errors. Understanding how a browser or server interprets each segment is essential during API integration, web routing setup, and marketing campaign debugging. Our Free Online URL Parser uses the browser URL API to break an address into its normalized URL, protocol, hostname, origin, port, pathname, fragment, path segments, and query parameters. If an input such as example.com or localhost:3000 has no explicit scheme, the tool assumes HTTPS; protocol-relative URLs are also interpreted as HTTPS. A relative path by itself is rejected because its host cannot be determined without a base URL.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to include http:// or https:// in the input field?
- No. If you enter a hostname such as example.com or localhost:3000 without a scheme, the tool assumes HTTPS and clearly marks that assumption. A relative path such as /docs/page is rejected because a base URL is required to determine its origin.
- How does the parser handle encoded characters in query string parameters?
- The parser automatically decodes percent-encoded character sequences (such as %20 for spaces or %26 for ampersands) into human-readable plain text inside the extracted key-value parameter table.
- Is my input URL or tracking parameter sent to an external server?
- The URL parsing operation runs in your browser and does not require uploading the working URL to our application server. Signed URLs, bearer tokens, and credentials can still be sensitive, so use test or redacted values when appropriate.
- What is the difference between hostname and origin in a URL?
- The hostname represents the domain or IP address (e.g., example.com), whereas the origin includes the protocol scheme, domain, and port number combined (e.g., https://example.com:8080).
