Overview
About String Length & Word Counter
Accurate text metrics are essential across web development, content creation, social media marketing, and data payload management. Authors and copywriters must adhere to strict word counts for articles and meta tags, while developers often need to measure exact character lengths and UTF-8 byte sizes for database column limits, API payloads, and local storage constraints. Counting words or measuring string lengths manually or relying on basic word processors can be misleading, especially when dealing with whitespace, special punctuation, multi-byte Unicode characters, or emoji sequences. Our String Length & Word Counter updates text metrics as you type or paste content, including character and word counts plus the additional statistics exposed by the tool. The calculations run locally in the browser, so the text does not need to be uploaded for counting.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Does the byte size calculation accurately handle multi-byte Unicode characters and emoji?
- Yes. The counter calculates byte sizes based on standard UTF-8 encoding, correctly accounting for multi-byte characters, accented letters, non-Latin scripts, and complex emoji.
- How is the estimated reading time calculated?
- Reading time is calculated using a standard benchmark of 200 to 250 words per minute for average adult silent reading.
- Is my pasted text saved or uploaded to any remote server?
- The counting and text-statistics operation runs in your browser and does not require uploading the working text to our application server for analysis.
- What counts as a word in this tool?
- Where supported, the tool uses the browser’s Intl.Segmenter word segmentation so word-like units work better across Unicode and languages that do not rely only on spaces. A fallback is used when that browser API is unavailable.
