MD5 is not secure for cryptographic use

MD5 is a legacy hash algorithm with known collision weaknesses. Use it only for compatibility, legacy checksums, or comparing non-security-sensitive data. Do not use MD5 for passwords, digital signatures, certificates, or security-sensitive integrity checks.

Quick start

How to use MD5 Hash Generator

  1. 1

Enter or paste your text or raw string data into the input field.

  2. 2

The tool automatically processes your input and computes the 128-bit MD5 hash in real time.

  3. 3

Select between standard lowercase or uppercase hexadecimal formatting options.

  4. 4

Click the "Copy" button to save the 32-character MD5 hash string directly to your clipboard.

Overview

About MD5 Hash Generator

MD5 (Message-Digest Algorithm 5) is a widely used cryptographic hash function that processes an arbitrary length message input and converts it into a fixed-size 128-bit hash value, typically represented as a 32-character hexadecimal string. Developed by Ronald Rivest, MD5 is deterministic: identical input bytes produce the same 128-bit digest, while small input changes usually produce a very different output. MD5 was once widely used for cryptographic integrity, but practical collision attacks mean it should not be used where collision resistance or modern security is required. Common or low-entropy inputs can also be guessed using dictionaries or precomputed tables. Our Free Online MD5 Hash Generator enables developers, database administrators, and QA engineers to quickly compute MD5 checksums in real time. Whether you are generating checksums for file integrity checks, constructing legacy database keys, or creating Gravatar email hash parameters, this client-side utility computes the digest directly inside your browser without requiring a server-side hashing request.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is MD5 secure for password hashing or sensitive security authentication?
No. MD5 is not suitable for password storage and should not be used where collision resistance is required. Passwords should use a dedicated password-hashing function such as Argon2id, scrypt, bcrypt, or PBKDF2 with an appropriate salt and work factor.
Can an MD5 hash be decrypted back to the original text?
MD5 is a hash function, not encryption, so there is no decryption operation. However, attackers can often discover weak or common inputs by hashing guesses or using precomputed lookup data and comparing the resulting digest.
Will the same text input always produce the same MD5 output?
Yes. MD5 is a deterministic algorithm. As long as the input bytes match exactly (including line endings and case sensitivity), the resulting MD5 hash will be identical every time across any device or operating system.
Is my input string transmitted to external servers when generating a hash?
The MD5 calculation runs in your browser and does not require uploading the input text to our application server for hashing. Site-level analytics and advertising are covered separately in the Privacy Policy.
