SHA-256 message digest

Input text is encoded as UTF-8 and hashed locally with the browser Web Crypto API.

This produces a plain SHA-256 digest. It is not encryption, HMAC, a digital signature, or a password hashing scheme.

Quick start

How to use SHA-256 Hash Generator

  1. 1

Enter or paste your text or raw string data into the input text area.

  2. 2

The tool instantly calculates and displays the 256-bit SHA-256 hash digest in real time.

  3. 3

Toggle output options between standard lowercase or uppercase 64-character hexadecimal strings.

  4. 4

Click the "Copy" button to save the generated hash string directly to your clipboard.

Overview

About SHA-256 Hash Generator

SHA-256 (Secure Hash Algorithm 256-bit) is a member of the SHA-2 family of cryptographic hash functions designed by the National Security Agency (NSA). It processes arbitrary input data and converts it into a fixed-size 256-bit (32-byte) message digest, typically represented as a 64-character hexadecimal string. SHA-256 is widely used in integrity checking and as a building block inside larger cryptographic protocols. It is deterministic, exhibits a strong avalanche effect, and is designed to make finding collisions computationally infeasible with current practical techniques. Our SHA-256 Hash Generator computes a plain SHA-256 digest for the supplied text in the browser. It is useful for checksum comparison, test vectors, deterministic fingerprints, and development work. A plain SHA-256 digest is not an HMAC, digital signature, encryption method, or password-hashing scheme. Those use cases require additional keys, protocols, or dedicated password-hashing functions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is SHA-256 secure for modern cryptographic applications?
SHA-256 remains a widely used collision-resistant hash function for many integrity and cryptographic constructions. However, a plain SHA-256 digest is not by itself a password-hashing scheme, MAC, signature, or encryption mechanism.
Can SHA-256 hashes be reversed or decrypted?
No. SHA-256 is a deterministic one-way hash function, not an encryption algorithm. It discards structural input information to produce a fixed 256-bit digest, making mathematical reversal impossible.
Should I use plain SHA-256 to store passwords?
No. SHA-256 is intentionally fast, which makes large-scale password guessing efficient for attackers. Password storage should use a dedicated password-hashing function such as Argon2id, scrypt, bcrypt, or PBKDF2 with a unique salt and an appropriate work factor.
Is my input string saved or logged when generating a hash?
SHA-256 calculation runs in your browser and does not require uploading the input text to our application server for hashing. This tool computes a plain digest and does not accept a secret key.
