Privacy-first processing
This tool is designed to process its working input in your browser. For details about site-level analytics, advertising, and data handling, see the Privacy Policy.
SHA-1 is legacy
SHA-1 has known collision weaknesses and should not be used for new security-sensitive designs. SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 are SHA-2 digest algorithms.
These are plain message digests. They are not password hashing, encryption, digital signatures, or HMAC.
Quick start
How to use SHA Hash Generator (SHA-1 / SHA-2)
- 1
Type or paste your input plain text string into the editor area.
- 2
The tool dynamically processes the string and generates SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 hashes in real time.
- 3
Toggle between uppercase and lowercase hexadecimal output formats as required.
- 4
Click the "Copy" button next to any generated hash digest to save it directly to your clipboard.
Overview
About SHA Hash Generator (SHA-1 / SHA-2)
Cryptographic hash functions map input bytes to fixed-size digests. This tool applies SHA-1 and SHA-2 family algorithms (SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512) to text input and displays the resulting digest as hexadecimal. The functions are deterministic and designed so small input changes produce very different outputs. SHA-1 is retained mainly for compatibility and legacy identifiers because practical collision attacks make it unsuitable for new security designs. SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 are members of the SHA-2 family and remain widely used as building blocks in modern integrity and cryptographic protocols. This multi-hash tool computes plain message digests with browser Web Crypto APIs. It does not create HMACs, digital signatures, encryption, or password hashes with adaptive work factors. The entered text is processed locally by the hashing operation.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Are cryptographic hash functions reversible?
- No. Cryptographic hash functions like SHA-1 and SHA-512 are one-way mathematical algorithms. It is computationally infeasible to reconstruct original plain text from a generated hash digest alone.
- What is the main difference between SHA-1 and SHA-512?
- SHA-1 produces a 160-bit digest and should not be selected for new collision-resistant security uses. SHA-512 is part of the SHA-2 family and produces a 512-bit digest with much stronger collision resistance than SHA-1.
- Is my input string uploaded to a remote server for hashing?
- The digest calculation runs in your browser with Web Crypto and does not require uploading the input to our server for hashing. Do not use these fast general-purpose digests as a password-storage scheme.
- Can this tool generate uppercase and lowercase hexadecimal hashes?
- Yes. You can switch between standard lowercase and uppercase hexadecimal formats with a single toggle.
